Sizes, sources, and concrete mix
Chippings — crushed granite, the coarse aggregate in concrete — are dearer than sand because crushing is more work than digging, and like sand they sell by the tipper trip with the delivered price driven by haulage distance from the quarry. Size matters for the job: 3/4-inch (about 20mm) is the general-purpose aggregate for foundations, columns and slabs, while smaller 1/2-inch chippings suit thinner sections and finer concrete. A workable structural concrete is roughly one part cement, two parts sand, four parts chippings by volume, so a build's chippings requirement scales with how much concrete it pours — foundations and a suspended slab use a lot, a simple bungalow on a ground slab rather less. Quality signals are straightforward: clean, angular, uniform stone with little dust or clay gives a stronger bond than rounded or dirty aggregate. When you compare quotes, hold the quarry source and the delivery distance constant, because those, not the stone itself, are where the price difference usually sits.
Estimate a full materials bill
Every material feeds a house-build estimate. Materials only — and the totals move with the cedi (see the rate).
| Material | Quantity | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Cement (50kg bags) | 495 | ₵50,490 |
| Iron rod (tons, mild) | 4 | ₵40,000 |
| Blocks (6-inch) | 3,600 | ₵32,400 |
| Sand (tipper trips) | 4 | ₵6,400 |
| Chippings (tipper trips) | 3 | ₵7,800 |
| Roofing sheets | 50 | ₵10,000 |
| Materials total (~150 sqm) | ₵147,090 |
Materials only — this is not a full build cost. It excludes land, labour, finishes, fittings, plumbing, electricals, doors, windows and professional fees, which together often match or exceed the shell. Quantities use Ghana rule-of-thumb ratios and are an estimate.
The cement and iron lines move with the cedi — a 5% move in the rate shifts the cement cost by roughly the same. See today's cedi rate before you lock a delivery schedule.
