Electrical Material Prices in Ghana

A ~90-metre coil of 1.5mm² cable runs about ₵145–380; 2.5mm² about ₵470–610. Switches and 13A sockets are ₵20–160 a point. Genuine-brand cable costs more than import coils for good reason.

Cable gauges, the brand split, and accessories

House wiring is bought largely as single-core building cable in coils of about 90 metres, sized by the circuit: 1.5mm² for lighting, 2.5mm² for socket rings, and heavier 4mm²–6mm² for cookers, water heaters and the main runs. The most important thing to know about cable in Ghana is the brand split: a cheap import coil can be a third the price of genuine Nexans or Kabelmetal, and the gap is not just margin — lighter, under-gauge or short-measure coils carry less copper, run hotter and are a genuine fire risk. On the wiring buried in your walls for decades, this is the wrong place to save; buy certified cable from a known brand and treat a suspiciously cheap coil with suspicion. Accessories — switches, 13A sockets, ceiling roses, a consumer unit (fuse box) with breakers, conduit and back-boxes — are the rest of the first fix, and here the range from budget to branded (MK, Schneider) is wide but the stakes lower. Count your points: every light, switch, socket and appliance outlet is a cable run and an accessory, and a modern home has dozens, so the tally climbs quickly. An earthing system and, increasingly, provision for a generator changeover or solar are worth planning in. Finally, the connection itself — a prepaid ECG meter — is a separate cost on our fittings list. Use a licensed electrician; the materials are only as safe as the installation.

Estimate a full materials bill

Every material feeds a house-build estimate. Materials only — and the totals move with the cedi (see the rate).

MaterialQuantityCost
Cement (50kg bags)495₵50,490
Iron rod (tons, mild)4₵40,000
Blocks (6-inch)3,600₵32,400
Sand (tipper trips)4₵6,400
Chippings (tipper trips)3₵7,800
Roofing sheets50₵10,000
Materials total (~150 sqm)₵147,090

Materials only — this is not a full build cost. It excludes land, labour, finishes, fittings, plumbing, electricals, doors, windows and professional fees, which together often match or exceed the shell. Quantities use Ghana rule-of-thumb ratios and are an estimate.

The cement and iron lines move with the cedi — a 5% move in the rate shifts the cement cost by roughly the same. See today's cedi rate before you lock a delivery schedule.
