Iron Rod Prices in Ghana

A 12-metre length of 12mm rod runs about ₵160; 16mm about ₵280. By the ton, mild steel is roughly ₵10,000 — buying bulk is cheaper per length.

At piece prices (₵160 each): ₵15,040. By the ton (₵10,000/ton): ₵10,000about ₵5,040 cheaper buying bulk.

Lengths per ton are approximate for 12-metre deformed mild-steel bars and vary with exact weight and mill. Buyers are often quoted by the ton but budget by the piece — this is where the two meet. High-tensile rod costs more per ton.

Sizes, tons, and what a build needs

Reinforcement rod — 'iron' in Ghanaian usage, though it is steel — is where the per-unit confusion bites hardest, because it trades three ways: by the piece (a 12-metre length), by the bundle, and by the metric ton. Dealers often quote wholesale by the ton while a self-builder budgets by the piece, and the two only reconcile through weight: roughly 94 lengths of 12mm to a ton, 53 of 16mm, 135 of 10mm. Size follows the job — 16mm for columns and heavy foundations, 12mm for slabs and beams, 10mm for stirrups and light slabs — and a typical three-bedroom needs on the order of three to five tons across sizes. Like cement, rod is import-linked and moves with the cedi and with global steel prices, so it is worth pricing close to purchase. Buy by the ton where the volume justifies it; the per-piece premium at retail is real. High-tensile rod costs more than mild steel and is reserved for multi-storey and heavier loads.

Estimate a full materials bill

Every material feeds a house-build estimate. Materials only — and the totals move with the cedi (see the rate).

MaterialQuantityCost
Cement (50kg bags)495₵50,490
Iron rod (tons, mild)4₵40,000
Blocks (6-inch)3,600₵32,400
Sand (tipper trips)4₵6,400
Chippings (tipper trips)3₵7,800
Roofing sheets50₵10,000
Materials total (~150 sqm)₵147,090

Materials only — this is not a full build cost. It excludes land, labour, finishes, fittings, plumbing, electricals, doors, windows and professional fees, which together often match or exceed the shell. Quantities use Ghana rule-of-thumb ratios and are an estimate.

The cement and iron lines move with the cedi — a 5% move in the rate shifts the cement cost by roughly the same. See today's cedi rate before you lock a delivery schedule.

Common questions

  • About ₵160 for a standard 12-metre deformed length; buying by the ton (mild steel ~₵10,000) works out cheaper per piece.
