Supply and waste, PVC vs PPR, and fittings
Plumbing materials divide into supply (clean water in) and waste (used water out), and the pipe sizes follow the job. Large-diameter PVC — 3-inch and 4-inch — carries soil and waste from toilets and drains and runs about ₵95–125 a length; small-bore ½-inch and ¾-inch PVC or PPR carries cold water to taps and cisterns at ₵25–55 a length. PPR — the green heat-fused pipe — is the modern choice for pressurised and hot lines because its joints are welded rather than glued and don't leak under pressure, and it is increasingly specified throughout; solvent-weld PVC remains common and cheaper for cold and waste. The fittings — elbows, tees, sockets, valves and traps — are a real cost first-timers forget; a run of pipe needs a fitting at every change of direction, and they add up to a meaningful share of the plumbing bill. Fixtures are the visible spend: a complete water-closet (WC) set with cistern runs ₵750–2,500 for mainstream models, with smart and imported units far dearer, and you'll add wash-hand basins, a kitchen sink, taps, a shower set and a water heater. For storage and pressure most homes fit an overhead Polytank, which sits with the fittings on our list. Buy a little extra pipe and a spread of fittings — a job stalls for want of a single ₵5 elbow — and use a plumber who sets the waste falls correctly, because bad gradients, not bad pipe, cause most blockages.
